| Silverplating and Sheffield Plate | |
| The term "plate" means "wrought" or "flattened"
silver. The British usage of the terms "plate" or "silverplate" is
correctly confined to solid silver. In America, the reference to "silverplate"
is to electroplated wares formed of base metals overlaid with silver.
Although various methods have been used to make "silverplate" since
ancient times, the electroplating process was brought to America in the
mid 1800's. "Old Sheffield Plate" was rediscovered in England by
Thomas Bolsover in 1724. In this method silver was "bound" to
copper by the use of heat. One of the basic differences between
electroplated and "Old Sheffield Plate" is that articles of Old
Sheffield Plate were made just as solid silver articles were
made...BEFORE the plating process and not after (as electroplated wares
are). Silversmiths "raised" the body of an article into shape from
flat sheets of metal using mallets and hammers.

| Methods of Glass Manufacture | |
| The basic materials of glass are mixed together and
then melted to get molten glass. The molten glass, or metal (as it
is called), can be shaped in several ways....by blowing through a
blowpipe or blown into a mold, removed and then freeblown or it could be
pressed in a mold using weight (no blowing involved). CRYSTAL SPECIAL ...Click to view !!...."Jamestown, blue" by Fostoria Link to our "china" page...www.rmsterling.com/china.html Link to our "crystal" page....www.rmsterling.com/crystal.html |
